Abstract

Objectives: To establish a statistical relationship between levels of perception of family function and levels of risk of consumption of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. To measure the impact that these levels of perception of the family function cause in the odds of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs consumption on Colegio de Bachillerato “27 de Febrero”’ students in Loja, Ecuador. Methodology: Cross-sectional study with non-probabilistic sampling of a non-experimental type, made up of 664 students of basic higher education and high school. Two psychometric instruments were applied: APGAR-family and the Alcohol, Tobacco and Substance Consumption Detection Test (ASSIST v3.1). Results: the findings showed a significant association between the perception of family functionality and the consumption of drugs (p<.01), alcohol (p<.05) and tobacco (p<.10). The odd ratios determine that the chances of consumption for students with low perception family function are 2.58, 2.10 and 2.45 times higher than students with high perception of family function for alcohol, tobacco and drugs respectively. Conclusions: As the perception of family function decreases, the level of risk in adolescent consumption increases.
