Skin cancer: educational strategies for raising awareness and changing behaviors in a community
Keywords:
Skin cancer, prevention, educational intervention, knowledge levelAbstract
Skin cancer is the most prevalent type of cancer in the province of El Oro. Due to the increasing risk of skin cancer and its severe consequences, educational programs serve as a means to promote behavioral changes and prevent this condition. Therefore, the objective of this research was to implement educational strategies for the prevention of skin cancer among the residents of La Alborada neighborhood from October 2024 to January 2025. The study was quantitative, cross-sectional, and descriptive. The sample consisted of 50 inhabitants of the neighborhood, selected through convenience sampling. The intervention was carried out in four phases: initial assessment, action plan, community training, and evaluation of acquired knowledge. The data were entered into the IBM SPSS Statistics 26 software, where the database was created and the descriptive statistics were then calculated according to the study variables. The educational session significantly improved the population’s level of knowledge regarding skin cancer. It was concluded that the implementation of educational strategies was essential in raising awareness among residents about the importance of adopting preventive measures against the disease.References
