Abstract

The Reserve is one of the main tourist destinations in the Paltas canton; however, there is still a lack of detailed information about its flora. This situation presents an opportunity to develop new lines of research and, in this way, contribute to the protection of its rich biodiversity. Bryophytes and lichens are characteristic elements of montane forests, dry forests, Amazonian forests, scrublands, and páramos in Ecuador and have been used as indicators of environmental changes. Therefore, the objective was to describe the diversity of bryophytes and epiphytic lichens in the Pisaca Reserve of the Paltas Canton, which will support decision-making related to the management and conservation of these small biodiversity refuges. The first report of lichens and bryophytes (94 species) was presented, including 66 lichens and 28 bryophytes across three zones, demonstrating that the Pisaca Reserve functions as a refuge for biodiversity.
