Ecuador is a country with intense seismic activity, which has caused earthquakes with significant human and material losses. Despite this, it has become increasingly common to build houses informally, without structural studies to guarantee their seismic resilience. This paper evaluated the seismic performance of a set of typical buildings in Loja city, originally built with reinforced concrete and later vertically expanded by informal means with structural steel. By applying a nonlinear static analysis, commonly known as pushover, the seismic performance was evaluated, and it was found that a large portion of the analyzed buildings would not be able to resist the design earthquake, essentially due to their lack of stiffness and ductility. In response, a retrofit proposal was developed for these structures, which increased the cross-sections of beams and columns. The proposed retrofit significantly improved the seismic performance of the buildings and solved the structural deficiencies found, guaranteeing the safety of the inhabitants of these buildings in the design earthquake.Metrics
