Prevalence of Geohelmintos and socio-environmental factors in urban and rural areas, canton Paquisha, Ecuador

The soil-transmitted helminthiasís (HTS) are a public health problem that keeps affecting to millions of people. In urban areas (ZU) and rural areas (ZR) from canton Paquisha, the prevalence of HTS and its relationship with socio-environmental factors were studied. A questionnaire was applied to 167 people with age between 5 and 82 years, who also underwent through a coproparasítology study. The presence of total and fecal coliforms in water for home use were evaluated. The species identified were: Ascaris lumbricoides (44.3 %), Trichuris trichiura (23.3 %), Uncinaria sp. (1.8 %) and Strongyloides stercoralis (0.6 %). HTS prevalence was 48.5 %, in the ZU was 28.7 %, and in RA was 74.0 %. Association between social environmental factors (ZU and ZR, water quality, excretas disposal, coliforms in water) and the presence of helminths was found (p<0.01). The absence of sanitary infrastructure, especially in the ZR, is the key factor in the high prevalence of HTS.Metrics
