Abstract

Making the right decisions about the conservation of species should be based on the best possible knowledge regarding the subject of interest; an initial step in this process is the definition of the geographic distribution with the highest resolution as possible. In Ecuador, in recent years, there has been a notable increase in the recording of bird species in places where their presence had not been previously reported; this phenomenon is attributed to the existence of information gaps, limited research and the increase in the number of birdwatchers. In this paper we present updated information on the distribution of 13 species of birds inhabiting the Ecuadorian Amazon (Spatula discors, Charadrius collaris, Vanellus chilensis, Calidris minutilla, Tringa melanoleuca, Claravis talpacoti, Chloroceryle aenea, Porphyrio martinica, Heliornis fulica, Gymnoderus foetidus, Tyrannus savana, Megascops choliba, Anhinga anhinga), all reported for the first time in the province of Zamora Chinchipe, in the southeastern part of the country. Our results suggest that rivers play the role of dispersal corridors for most of these species, and that anthropic alteration processes facilitate colonization for those species considered habitat generalists. The new records presented here increase our knowledge of the bird distribution in southeastern Ecuador.
