Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common metabolic-endocrine disorder that affects women of reproductive age and it is associated with elevated levels of androgens and ovarian dysfunction. This condition is also common for patients with obesity, insulin resistance, and lipid profile disorders. This study was descriptive and retrospective, and the main aim was to determine the prevalence of obesity in women of reproductive age with polycystic ovary syndrome. The clinical records of 50 women of reproductive age with PCOS, tended at Loja’s health centers between 2005 and 2010, were studied. The World Health Organization classification was used. Results showed a higher frequency of PCOS in women in the 15-20 years age group (40%). Furthermore, 44% of studied women had normal bodyweight, 30% had overweight, and 26% had obesity, being type I (body mass index of 30 kg / m2) the most frequent (10%). These results lead to the conclusion that there is not a determinant relationship between obesity and PCOS, at least in this research.Metrics
