Abstract

Hanging is a way of death widely used for the ease of carrying it out. This investigation was carried out at the Forensic Sciences Research Center (CICF) in the city of Loja (Ecuador) by collecting existing data in the statistical death reports that rest in the Statistical Center of the CICF. The number of autopsies performed on suicide corpses by hanging was determined, adding information regarding gender, age group, origin and the possible causes referred by relatives, friends or acquaintances of the deceased to carry out this act, in the city and province of Loja in the period January 2015 - June 2016. A total of 43 cases was obtained, where the most affected gender was males with 37 cases, and the age groups with the highest prevalence were those between 11-20 years and 21-30 years with 12 cases in each group. The possible causes for the most part were not referred for what is considered an unknown cause with 21 cases, and it was also known that Loja was the canton where this type of suicide was highest.
