Abstract

The objective of this research is to analyze the effect of production on the unemployment rate of Ecuador, Latin America and the world using time series data for the period 1991-2014. The results show that the data from Ecuador do not fit the Okun (1952) model. However, the relationship is satisfied with the world and Latin America data, although the coefficients are statistically insignificant. These results suggest that the Okun (1952) curve has no further support in the data, but was the result of a particularity of some developed countries. In the Ecuadorian case, there are other variables such as public spending and taxes that jointly explain unemployment better.
