Análisis de la relación entre el consumo de energía y las emisiones de carbono en Ecuador

Abstract

El objetivo de esta investigación es examinar la relación de equilibrio de corto y largo plazo entre el consumo de energía y las emisiones de dioxido de carbono en Ecuador durante el periodo 1971-2014. Con el n de alcanzar dicho objetivo, estimamos modelos de vectores autorregresivos, de corrección de error y de causalidad. Los resultados son consistentes con el marco teórico de la Curva de Kuznets Ambiental. Encontramos la existencia de una relación de equilibrio de corto y largo plazo entre las dos variables. Asimismo, existe causalidad tipo Granger unidireccional entre las dos variables que va desde las emisiones de dioxido de carbono hacia el consumo de energía. Una implicación de política económica derivada de esta investigación es que para reducir las emisiones de dioxido de carbono las fuentes de energía deben ser sustentables. Esto llevara a reducir las emisiones contaminantes sin limitar el crecimiento de la economía.
