Leptospirosis is a transmissible disease of animals and humans caused by any of the pathogens of the genus Leptospira. Infection in susceptible species depends on exposure to infected animals or contaminated environments. In Ecuador, due to geographical, environmental and hygienic-sanitary characteristics in rural areas, leptospirosis is one of the most frequent zoonoses in humans.. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of leptospirosis in canine patients treated at the Veterinary Hospital of the National University of Loja and the factors associated with infection. 100 canine serum samples were analyzed by the MAT method using a panel of 16 serovars of Leptospira interrogans, Leptospira borgpetersenii, Leptospira santarosai and Leptospira biflexa between November 2019 and February 2020. Owners were surveyed to obtain information about: age, race, sex, origin, proximity to other species, rodent contact and control, source of drinking water; and, presence of wetlands activities of the animal. For the statistical analysis, Chi square tests or Fisher's exact test were used (outcomes were considered statistically significant at p ≤0.05). The frequency of canine leptospirosis was 29%; the animals were reactive for Canicola, Autumnalis, Hebdomadis and Pomona serovars. The source of drinking water variable was associated with infection by Leptospira spp. (p=0,02).Metrics
