Abstract

In this project, we implemented a prototype of a base station for a 4G-LTE network as an experimental tool for the study and analysis of mobile networks for the Telecommunications Engineering program at the National University of Loja. It has been identified that students in our program lack practical experience with the latest wireless technologies, so this prototype will enable students to better understand the operation of 4G-LTE networks, as it allows observation of the operation, communication, services, and different types of data exchanged between the different entities of the network. To execute this project, we analyzed different open-source LTE implementation software, as well as other complementary technologies/devices needed for the deployment of the LTE network. The project was developed using the OpenAirInterface (OAI) software platform and the BladeRF Micro 2.0 xA9 hardware, which are the main elements that allow the emulation of the operation of a commercial 4G LTE network. The implementation was done at the I2TEC of our university. Finally, to determine the performance of the network, we carried out various tests in the telecommunications laboratory using tools and/or services that can be implemented in the network. With this, we delivered a suitable prototype for a better understanding of this technology and greater practical knowledge about its operation.
