Climate change is a global phenomenon affecting every corner of the world, yet its impacts disproportionately burden the poorest and most vulnerable populations. Rural households are particularly susceptible to climate change due to their dependence on natural resources and their lack of information and resources to face these challenges. However, at a global level, there is still a significant lack of knowledge about the adaptive capacity of these households to cope with the impacts of climate change, making it difficult to make informed decisions to mitigate these effects. In this context, the central question guiding this research is: What is the adaptive capacity of rural households in the canton of Zamora? To address this knowledge gap, a study was conducted in the parishes of Timbara and Guadalupe in the canton of Zamora Chinchipe. The research evaluated adaptive capacity using an index that considered three dimensions: socioeconomic, institutional, and socioecological. The results of this study revealed that households in the rural communities of Timbara and Guadalupe exhibit medium and low levels of adaptive capacity. Households that scored highest on the adaptive capacity index were characterized by higher educational levels, access to credit, greater income diversification, higher income levels, and a lower proportion of individuals under 15 and over 65 years of age. These findings highlight the critical need to implement educational programs and inclusive policies to strengthen adaptive capacity in rural communities.References
