Alexander von Humboldt presents the contrast of the Ecuadorian geography: this territory can offer the highest, but also the lowest zones. The sedimentary rocks do not exceed 3000 meters (1539 toes) in altitude; a dense limestone is located above 1800 meters (923 toes), but will never be observed covered by sandstone rocks. He notes that the peaks of the Andes are higher than Mont-Blanc and that they can pass five thousand meters. He found no strange rocks: "The tropical region gathers almost all the types of rocks which have been found on the rest of our earth".References
