Abstract

Alexander von Humboldt in this missive describes scientifically the volcanoes of Ecuador, he does not fail to offer his measurements. But he also assures that while the Tunguragua loses dimensions, the Cotopaxi shows fierceness. He assures that Chimborazo is a threat to Quito. In addition, he narrates some of the hardships experienced to conquer the summit of the huge mountains: "Our lips were bleeding. Our Indians abandoned us as usual. [...] We all felt a malaise, a weakness, an urge to vomit that surely came from the lack of oxygen in these regions". He also notes his admiration for Dr. Mutis.
