Aging, loneliness and the media: perspectives from communication, psychology

This study aims to explore whether elderly individuals living alone in Madrid use television, radio, and the internet to alleviate feelings of loneliness. The research takes an interdisciplinary approach, drawing from sociology, communication studies, and both social and developmental psychology. The fieldwork sample consists of 20 individuals over the age of 65, all residing in single-person households in the Usera district of Madrid, Spain. The findings indicate that participants facing more adverse circumstances, such as family abandonment or declining health, are more vulnerable to feelings of loneliness. These feelings are reported more frequently by men than women and appear to affect divorced individuals the least. The results also show that lower levels of family involvement are associated with a poorer perception of health. Among the media studied, television, followed by radio, emerges as a key channel offering parasocial interaction, serving as a substitute for face-to-face communication. When it comes to the use of newer technologies, the persistence of the digital divide is confirmed. These findings invite reflection not only on interpersonal communication in later life, the role of family as a support group, and the careful planning of community care policies, but also on the need for scientific and social collaboration to support the oldest members of society.References
