Abstract

This paper examines the relationship between urbanization and inequality, measured bythe Gini coeficient at the global level, in the years 1980 to 2015. We use data from theWorld Bank’s World Development Indicator and the inequaliti database. Through the useof a panel data methodology, it is sought to demonstrate that the growth of urbanizationgenerates more income inequality worldwide. We estimate the relationship in a globalcontext of great changes and intense political debates where political ideology in differentconceptions has generated different policies between countries. The results show the existenceof a short-term relationship between the analysis variables and the Granger causalitytests indicate that urbanization causes income inequality in these countries unidirectionally.
